Stockpiling Your Pantry

We live pretty good here on the farm. We have angus beef cows that raise and we always butcher one for our organic beef consumption. We are on the lookout for a good milk cow. Charles is going to build me a henhouse this spring sometime but until then the neighboring farmer has eggs to sell. She also has goats which has me wondering about goatmilk?? I drank it when I was younger, but can't remember if I liked it or not- weird huh?

We raise a large veggie garden and can most of the produce. We also have wild blackberries and raspberries for pies and jams that I also can or freeze. There are a couple apple trees that we also get fruit from to can and freeze.

Charles and the boys are very avid hunters and fishers. So that also gets can and frozen.

I do tend to keep a pantry full of basic staples such as flour, sugar, coffee, and oil. But with the rising prices of fuel and food it is wise to know your prices at the supermarket and know when it is on sale and what kind of deal you are getting. If you are getting a good deal on a non- perishable food item it may be wise to buy a case of it. You can store it under your bed if need be. Just make sure it will be something you will use and your family already likes . There is nothing more discouraging than buying a case of something only to find out no one in the family likes it.

These are wise decisions in homemaking no matter what your budget. Can you set back $5.00 a week to work on your pantry stockpile? It is a start.
