Homemade Sandwich Bread

Bread prices have jumped to over $2.00/ loaf. With a family of 5 we go through quite a bit of bread. I have also noticed that they have begun to "cheapen" up the bread, it just doesn't taste like it used to. I have a dear Old Order Amish friend that we write letters back and forth to each other and she gave me this recipe years ago. This recipe makes 2 loaves. It makes a wonderful sandwich bread, and it uses your food storage ingredients also.

Homemade White Bread

2 packages of yeast
2 c hot water
1 T salt
2 T honey
1/2 c sugar
7 c flour
1 egg, beaten
1/4 c oil

Put yeast sugar and water in large mixing bowl. Set Aside. Measure out flour and salt; put aside. Put egg, honey and oil in yeast mixture. Stir into flour mixture until you can knead. Knead very well. Place in oiled bowl and let rise one hour. Punch down and place in 2 greased loaf pans. Let rise 1 hour. Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes. Remove from pans and cool.

**Most people don't knead as long as they should, I try to knead for about 10 minutes - think of it as getting an upper body workout lol

** 1/2 wheat flour can be added to make wheat bread.

This sounds yummy - I'll have to try it. I've started making all our bread in the last few weeks - we notice it's stale right off the store shelf lately. UCK.

That was the same problem we are having! You open the new bag and it is stale.

Thanks for the recipe. We make an oatmeal bread in the bread maker as a default sandwich loaf, but a good white bread backup would be nice for things like grilled cheese or tuna :)
