Frugal Household tips

  • A button sewn to the corner of the dish cloth comes in handy to scrape sticky particles from the dishes.
  • To clean bottles, jars, or cruets thoroughly, place egg shells and warm soapy water in them and shake well. They will come clean
  • For a lint-less dustcloth, soak the cloth in hot soap suds with a few drops of turpentine for several hours. Wring out and let dry. These dustcloths give furniture a brilliant polish and hold dust. Repeat this process every two weeks.
  • A common clothespin, split in half makes 2 ideal and economical pan scrapers which do not rust or scratch enamelware or precious aluminum.
  • Paint the steps of your stepladder and sprinkle clean sand on the paint before it dries, it will give the steps a non-skid surface.
  • Save those slivers of toilet soap that are usually thrown away, save them until you have a handful. Soak them in water until they are soft then squeeze them together forming a large bar shaped mass. Let harden and you have an extra bar of bath soap in colors too.
  • Add a few drops of vinegar to glue that has thickened up, this will soften the glue.
  • To remove mildew from clothing, soak in buttermilk over night and wash as usual.
  • To remove mildew, 1/2 cup vinegar, douse the item up and down and mildew will disappear.
  • Try using shampoo to pretreat grease stains on shirt collars and pillow cases, etc., before putting them in the washer.

Anglenea--ice cubes and salt with some lemon work well too in substitute for egg shells. Awesome tips!!!
